Our Philosophy

After college, I took on a job that was very challenging. A condominium complex that demanded a high standard for what their expectations where regarding the lawn, trees and shrubs. They had run the gambit of companies who assured them that their chemical sprays were going to be the solution. They were looking for something different and that's where I stepped in. We were able to reverse the band aid approach and take on the concept of building up and working with nature, not fighting it. The results were remarkable to say the least. Later, I was part of a group of landscape professionals and horticulturists who had a crazy concept: Organic care for landscaping and maintaining plants. We created an organization called WNY Society for Organic Horticulture (WNYSOH). The tides were turning and people were starting to see the reality. You could provide quality without relying on chemicals. It wasn't until many years later that the word Organic had gone from a "dirty" word to something that is now in vogue.

At W.F.A. we have taken 35 years of experience and applied it too all things on this Farm. From soil testing, cover crops and paying attention to what the land tends to do or grow naturally. When it comes to insects, we: scout, hand pick, vacuum (yes vacuum!) and as a last resort we spray using natural based products. We understand the life cycles of the insects and predators who are constantly trying to utilize the resources and consume our plants. The word "Organic" has taken on a legal aspect that doesn't allow us to use the term without the approval of others. So, we cannot use the word but you can be assured we are as Environmentally friendly as they come and to top it off we also offset our electric consumption with a 10/kWh solar system. You will be hard pressed to find a Farm that is small enough to pay personal attention to such details yet big enough to help feed our neighbors!

How a CSA works:

Consumers and farmers work together on behalf of the Earth and each other. While the farmer is tending the Earth on behalf of others, consumers share the cost of supporting the farm and share the risk of variable harvests but also reap the abundance of a fruitful year. CSA is not about cheap food, which is usually neither nourishing nor grown with care of the environment in mind. CSA is about each of us being responsible. We encourage you to compare prices of our farm share to the supermarkets "cheap food."
